NZ Impersonators Head To Vegas

News Release
January 2007
Leading New Zealand impersonators will test themselves
against the world’s best for the first time ever when Austin
Powers takes a team including Freddie Mercury and Elton John
and others to the Original Celebrity Impersonators
Convention in Las Vegas next May.
Powers, aka entertainer Gary Brown, says the trip will
allow the cream of Kiwi talent to mix with the world’s best
and develop skills to further hone their acts.
“We’ve been given the opportunity to perform at the
Imperial Palace in Las Vegas and we’re looking forward to
knocking their socks off in Sin City,” Brown said.
“We will be there to confirm that we’re at the cutting
edge of this growing industry, but we’re also going to make
contacts, study some tricks of the trade and come back to
New Zealand as better and stronger performers.”
Brown, owner of Party Time Ltd and Tornado Entertainment
Ltd, has brought the troupe together to prepare for the trip
and says The Las Vegas All Stars Show will also feature
Steve Larkins as Freddie Mercury, Emmeline Swan as Cher,
Greg Ward as Sir Elton John.
Brown is in the process of selling in the 3-hour show to
clubs and theatres around the country and believes the
audience will be surprised, if not stunned, by the calibre
of impersonators.
“Being an impersonator means you have an immediate
connection with the audience. They’ve seen your character
and know what you’re about and you’re generally performing
songs that are iconic and much loved.
“But that level of familiarity also places pressure on
you to deliver what the crowd expects and we all take a
great deal of care to be authentic down to the last detail
including the vocals and nailing the performance that do
justice to the original performer.”
The convention in Las Vegas also includes the 16th annual
Reel Awards – the “Oscars” of the celebrity impersonation
industry.
